History
On April 9th, 1904 Times Square was named after the New York Times. Before Times Square though, it was Long Acre Square. It wasn't always a seemingly never ending crowded, bright, must see location. During the World War II era, what we now know as Times Square was a place for crime and prostitution. Times Square has always been a liberal space as when people visited, they pushed past what most would see as a limit. This was a place where lesbians and gays could find a sense freedom during that time period. Even though Times Square had a rough past, today it stands as a desirable location and its very successful.
